Radio/Podcast Template

Our Radio/Podcast Template is ideal for writing audio-first scripts such as radio plays, narrative podcasts, audio dramas, and other sound-driven productions. It uses a familiar structure for writers coming from screenplay or stageplay formats, with formatting tailored for audio storytelling.

Apply Radio/Podcast Template

This will affect the entire document and adjust all formatting.

  1. Select Format > Document Template > Default Templates
  2. Select Radio/Podcast Template
    1. If there is content in the document, it will ask if you want to confirm the template change.
  3. Select Apply Template


Core Line Types

These six line types form the foundation of the radio/podcast format and are the most commonly used.

  • Scene – Used to indicate location and setup for audio production
    • Bold and in all caps by default
  • Action – Describes the environment, physical actions, or background activity that helps create the soundscape
    • Indented and styled similarly to stageplay action
  • Character – The name of the speaker
    • Positioned to the left
  • Dialogue – The spoken line, placed side-by-side with the character name
    • Formatted to the right
  • Sound Effect – Indicates a specific sound that should be heard (e.g., SFX: CAR HORN BLARES )
    • Underlined by default
  • Music – Used for specific music cues (e.g., MUSIC: STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU )
    • Underlined by default

Line Type Behavior

  • Pressing Enter from Scene → Action line
  • Pressing Tab from Action → Character line
  • Pressing Enter from Character → Dialogue line
  • Pressing Enter from Sound Effect or Music → Action line


Additional Line Types

  • Parenthetical (Parens) – Used sparingly between Character and Dialogue to indicate tone or delivery (e.g., whispering)
  • Transition – Optional line type to mark transitions such as FADE OUT or END SCENE
  • Text – General-purpose writing space with no special formatting
  • Lyrics – Dialogue that is sung or recited appearing in all caps, typically for songs in musicals
  • ImageInsert multimedia such as reference images or visual notes


Outlining Line Types

  • Notes – Indented comments for reference, not counted in the page count
  • Outline – Provides structural guidance, hidden unless Show Outline is enabled
  • Sequence – Groups scenes into story beats, with similar functionality across templates
