- Select Format > Document Template > Default Templates
- Select Stageplay Template
- If there is content in the document, it will ask if you want to confirm the template change.
- Select Apply Template
Core Line Types
These five line types form the foundation of the stageplay format and are the most commonly used.
- Scene – Marks the beginning of a scene
- Unlike screenplays, stageplays do not use INT./EXT. or time of day.
- Example:

- Action – Describes the set, character entrances/exits, and stage directions
- Action lines are typically indented and italicized.
- Character – The name of a speaking character, centered and formatted in uppercase
- Parenthetical (Parens) – Provides direction for line delivery or mid-dialogue stage directions
- Dialogue – Character speech, aligned to the left and spanning the full width of the page
Additional Line Types
- New Act/End Act – Marks act divisions, more common in longer plays
- Audio – For sound cues used by stage managers and sound designers, underlined for emphasis
- Transition – Rarely used in stageplays, but can indicate cues like
Lights Fade to Black
- Text – Unformatted lines for miscellaneous content
- Lyrics - Dialogue that is sung or recited appearing in all caps, typically for musicals
- Dual Dialogue – For simultaneous speech, though rarely needed in stageplays
- Image - Insert multimedia, such as images, videos, or audio to provide additional context
Outlining Line Types
- Notes – Indented comments for reference, not counted in the page count
- Outline – Provides structural guidance, hidden unless Show Outline is enabled
- Sequence – Groups scenes into story beats, with similar functionality across templates
