Book Template

Our Book Template is designed for writing fiction or nonfiction manuscripts, including novels, novellas, memoirs, short story collections, and more. This template provides a clean, flexible writing environment that closely mirrors the experience of a traditional word processor while still giving you the benefits of WriterDuet’s formatting structure.

Core Line Types

These line types form the foundation of the book template and are the most commonly used.

  • Chapter – Use this line type to name your chapter. You can type any custom chapter title (e.g. Chapter One, The Storm, Part I: The Beginning).
  • Passage – Pressing Enter after a Chapter line creates a Passage line. This is where you’ll write the bulk of your content (narrative prose, dialogue, exposition, and more).
  • Heading 1 / Heading 2 / Heading 3 – Used to divide your book into sections or subsections. Each corresponds to a different font size:
    • Heading 1 – 22pt font
    • Heading 2 – 18pt font
    • Heading 3 – 16pt font

These headings are especially helpful for nonfiction works, formatting front/back matter, or visually breaking up long chapters.

Additional Line Types

  • Part – Marks a major division in your book. Automatically includes a page break (similar to New Act lines in screenplays).
  • Image – Allows inserting multimedia such as images, videos, or reference graphics.

Outlining Line Types

  • Notes – Indented comments for reference, not counted in the page count
  • Outline – Provides structural guidance, hidden unless Show Outline is enabled
  • Sequence – Allows grouping of passages, scenes, or chapters into larger beats or units
