Export a Document

Export a copy of your project to your device, email, or cloud drive. Stick to saving as a PDF for an easy print job or choose another of our many file format options for cross-platform collaboration. The choice is yours!

Set Up an Export

Exporting lets you compile specific documents from one project and download them as one file to your device, email, or external cloud storage.

  1. Go to Menu > File > Export to open the Export modal
    1. You can also open the Export modal by selecting the Export tool in the Tools widget OR by clicking the Project widget icon and selecting Export
  2. As needed, change the filename
  3. Select the desired file type
    1. WriterDuet (.wdz)
      1. *Note: By default, exported WriterDuet files will include all project documents.
    2. PDF (.pdf)
    3. Final Draft (.fdx)
    4. Final Draft w/o Notes (.fdx)
    5. Fountain (.fountain)

For PDF exports only: Select a PDF Option from the dropdown

    1. Default - This PDF export will include content based on what you select under Content Options (see step 4 for more information)
    2. Include Notes - This PDF export will include all Note lines and Comments left on the document. Comments will appear in color.
    3. Revised Pages Only - This PDF export will include only the pages that contain revisions.
      1. Revisions must be enabled/visible in the document (either via Menu > Revisions > View & Track OR Menu > Revisions > Date & Writers) to be included in the export.
      2. Revisions will display in the exported PDF as they appear in the app at the moment you setup/initiate the export. To have full-page color export, go to Menu > Customize > PDF and under Coloring, check the box for Print revision page color full background.
    4. Specific Pages - This PDF export will only include the pages specified. After selecting this PDF option, enter the Page(s) you want included in the text field.
      1. Use a dash between numbers for sections of pages (i.e. 2-5)
      2. Use commas to separate pages that are not consecutive (i.e. 3, 6, 8)
    5. Specific Scenes - This PDF export will only include the scenes specified. After selecting this PDF option, enter the Scene(s) you want included in the text field.
      1. Use a dash between numbers for sections of scenes (i.e. 2-5)
      2. Use commas to separate scenes that are not consecutive (i.e. 3, 6, 8)
      3. As desired, check the box for Preserve page numbers from the script. This will export only the selected scenes on their respective pages without any other content. For example, if you are exporting scenes 1 & 3 and scene 3 appears on page 4, the PDF will export scene 1 on the first page and scene 3 on the following page with its corresponding page number from the script. Alternatively, to export all content on the same page as the selected scenes, check the box for Show other page content along with scenes.
    6. As desired, check the box for Show indicator for content that is filtered out. This will add a gray wavy (i.e. zig-zag, squiggly, spiky, jagged) line anywhere content has been filtered from the script in the PDF export. This is especially useful when exporting specific pages or revised pages only, as it makes hidden or filtered content visibly marked for easier review.

  1. Select an option from the Content Options dropdown
    1. All lines - will export all line types, including Outline and Note lines
    2. Selected lines - will export only lines on the page that are currently selected with your cursor
    3. Visible lines - will export only the lines that are visible on the page, excluding Outline and Note lines (unless Include notes is selected under PDF Options)
    4. Filtered - will export only the line type(s) you select from the Filter dropdown

  1. Choose the specific documents from your project you want compiled in this export by clicking the Documents dropdown
    1. You can double-click or drag a document to move it either into the Include section or the Do Not Include section
      1. Project documents in the Include section will be compiled in this export in the order you arrange them
      2. Project documents in the Do Not Include section will not be compiled in this export
      3. Your project's default Title Page document will be in the Include section by default. Move it to Do Not Include to remove it from this specific export.

To save this specific arrangement of project documents for future exports, click the three-dot icon in the Include section and select Save Current Set.

      1. Name this Document Set and press Enter/Return OR select Save
      2. When setting up a future export of this project, click the three-dot icon in the Include section and select a saved Document Set. This will quickly rearrange documents in the same exact way you previously had set them up when you saved the Document Set.
      3. If desired, click the pencil icon to the right of the document to rename the saved Document Set
      4. If desired, click the trashcan icon to the right of the document to delete a saved Document Set

  1. Select a Storage option from the dropdown
    1. Hard Drive - This option will download the exported file to your device.
      1. If you are exporting to your Hard Drive via web browser, exports will download based on your browser's download settings.
      2. If you are exporting to your Hard Drive via the Desktop App, you will be prompted to select the file path of that export.
      3. If you are exporting to your Hard Drive via a mobile device web browser or the Mobile App for iOS/Android, exports will save based on your device's download and file saving settings.
    2. Email - This option will send the exported file to the email address connected to your WriterDuet account by default.
      1. You can enter a different email address in the text field to send the file to that email instead.
      2. To send to multiple email addresses, separate them with commas.
    3. External Cloud Drive
      1. Currently, the only direct external cloud backup options in WriterDuet are Google Drive and Dropbox — iCloud is currently not an available option.
      2. To change the account designated for your external cloud connection, reset your external cloud drive authentication.
    4. Select the blue Export button to finalize the export
      1. We cannot guarantee the formatting for some file types (e.g. Microsoft Word) will be one-to-one upon export, and you may see page count and/or formatting discrepancies. For a more accurate, readable file of your script, we recommend exporting as a PDF file.
